REPUBLIC of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given admits that the players have made it difficult for the side to get through to the Euro 2004 finals.
"We have made it hard for ourselves but we have only played two games and there are six more to go," said the Donegal-born Newcastle United No.1.
"Obviously we have made a bad start but I am glad we have now got a new manager in place so that he has a chance to look at the players."
The appointment of Brian Kerr as successor to Mick McCarthy inspired the Republic to a welcom 2-0 friendly victory in Scotland but Shay admits he was surprised to see his previous international boss depart.
"It was a shock when he went. It was Mick's decision at the end, but it was a shame.
"When a new manager comes in the players all start with pretty much a clean sheet, but the most important thing is that we have got to get to the final of the European Championships.
"We are still optimistic we can make it if we keep everyone fit. We haven't got a big squad but it is a good squad when everyone is available and there is no real reason why we can't qualify.
