To say it affects Shay is also an understatement. To say that Gary and Shay were together during their Newcastle days is also not the whole story. They have had a vibrant friendship till Sunday morning. We will perhaps never come to know what went on inside Gary’s mind but no matter what the reasons were, it will remain a tragedy for Gary and all who knew him, especially his family and close friends. It’s very heart wrenching to witness this happening. A nightmare that anyone would want to wake up from and know it was all just a dream. :-(

Shay spent three years at Blackburn and six years at Newcastle with Gennoe and rates the 58-year-old very highly because of his engaging sessions. He also pointed to Gennoe’s “professionalism” too, with no stone unturned in the build-up to matchday.

Shay says: “I have worked with Terry for many years. He’s one of the best – if not the best – goalkeeping coaches I have ever had. He is very bubbly, a really great character to have about the place. He changes things every day and keeps things fresh. It’s not the same mundane stuff every day.”

“You’re going into training buzzing about what you’re going to be doing each day. That’s a good thing.

“He’s ultra professional. He always covers what things you are going to encounter on a matchday too. That’s hugely important.

“By the time the game comes he will have covered everything. From a mental side, you feel comfortable because you know you’ve covered everything you need to that week.”

Shay also thinks Gennoe will be a massive help to the young shot-stoppers in the camp, as they look to eke out a career in the game.

Shay began working with Gennoe as an 18-year-old and thinks those formative years were vastly important in his development.

Shay added: “It’s great to have Terry on board – not just for me but for the other goalkeepers aswell.

“The young lads will benefit from working with him.

“When I first started working with him I was 18. He was a huge help to me and I think he will be fantastic for the young lads at the club too.

“He will really help them become better goalkeepers. He is very good.”

It seems that Lazarus lives on at Aston Villa, with Shay almost certain to start against Blackburn Rovers for his home debut in an Aston Villa shirt.

I think he’ll step in and he’ll be a fan favourite straight away because he makes spectacular saves that sometimes don’t look possible. He’s a good lad to have around the training ground, he mixes in and works hard in training.

“He’s going to bring a bit more experience to the team as well, which will help over the course of the season. I think players who can come and fit straight in to the squad will settle quicker. It’ll help them and it’ll help the team. Shay will come in and within a week it’ll seem like he’s been here a long time. We lost a few players during the summer, so we need to get a few in with some experience. I think Shay is a great start.

“He’s not played many club games recently but he’s played every international. When he’s turned up he’s been brilliant. He played three or four internationals at the end of the season and he didn’t concede a goal. Shay, like I said, is the ultimate professional. Whether he’s playing or not he’s always keeping himself fit and charged, so I don’t think that’ll be a worry for him.”
