After City signed Gareth Barry from Aston Villa so quickly, I genuinely thought they’ll be another 2-3 signings announced within 10 days, but it was not to be the case.
It’s coming slowly to the forefront the reason too for the delays in strengthening the squad. When Man City comes knocking, clubs go from wanting 10 million for a player to 20 million.
They seem to think there’s no end to what City will pay. Putting in light the 80 million Real Madrid are paying to have Cristiano Ronaldo or the 62 Million for Kaka, a 32 Million for Robinho seems like good business even though it was a record signing fee at the time.
Khaldoon al Mubarak (City Chairmen) confirms that with “I’m frustrated with people assuming we are going to throw crazy money at deals, that we won’t understand true values and we can’t negotiate or get value for a player.
“We’ve had numbers thrown at us that are a joke. There are situations where a £10m player will be offered to us for a ‘City price’ of £20m. We just leave. If people are throwing crazy numbers at us, fine, deals won’t be done.
“I will defend the value of every deal we have done.”
“When we looked at Kaka, the numbers being thrown around were crazy, suddenly in the news you see ‘City are crazy’ and ‘City are ‘irresponsible’.
“Why is it when Real Madrid not only talks about but actually closes two deals, like the ones they’ve closed with the numbers they’ve committed to, it’s fine?”
So I don’t see Man City spending stupid money on players and rightly so. Gareth Barry for 12 million seemed like a market price, fair for the seller and buyer.
Perhaps it will take a while for the selling clubs to accept that and therefore it could be a difficult summer to bring in new talent to Man City.
Just because you’ve got money in your pocket mean that the right players will come. We all hope they do but I guess when Man City rings you … folks must think the Lotto is calling them.
