Newcastle fans say “Thanks for the loyalty, honesty, integrity, honour, service and goodtimes. You’ll be sorely missed.”

It’s hard to believe that Shay has left the toon. It’s been 11 years with loads of memories and moments. Toon fans under Lee Ryder’s (ChronicleLIVE) initiative gave their thoughts and feelings on their departing keeper and friend of the toon! More here

“Nobody will quite know exactly which straw broke the camel’s back pushing Shay to leave the Toon. But if Kevin Keegan’s departure in September and a crazy management system which involves a failed League One manager deciding which players a proven manager is allowed to bring to his team wasn’t enough to push him to the limit, then some inept performances from a team that lacked reinforcements (after years of neglect in the transfer market) and gave him little protection probably polished the Eire stopper off.

It all came to a head against Liverpool in the 5-1 loss. That day with United all over the place, Given shouted “We’re s***” when taking his goal kicks.

The crowd responded with shouts of “We know!”

All of it down to frustration and after losing the plot with his defence and sprinting for the tunnel and shoving keeper coach Paul Barron out the way in the process at the end of the Liverpool game, it was obvious it was over.

After that Given was torn over whether to battle on or call it a day on Tyneside.

He chose to call it a day after 92 clean sheets for the club in his 11 years and an endless string of superb saves.

Two Champions League qualifications (one of them ended by Partizan Belgrade on pens), an FA Cup final and a few narrow misses in the other cups are all Given has to show for his time on Tyneside.

He’s probably the most popular goalie in the club’s history and if there is any justice in the world, NUFC will give him a testimonial anyway.

Taken from Lee’s column on ChronicleLIVE. Thanks Lee for all the years and memories too from Shay and everyone at Shay-Given.com. We’ve enjoyed it all, the good, the bad and the ugly to come from 11 years battling with the Toon and their TREMENDOUS fans!!! We’re going to miss it.

Lee writes in closing his thoughts:

“Good luck Shay, good luck to a true Toon legend.”

  2. I’m so so sad you’ve gone!! But you are too good for us now! I’ll always follow your career, good luck Shay.

    Don’t forget us though!!!

  3. Shay, WHAT IS THE TOON GOING TO DO WITHOUT YOU?? If you weren’t the best player on the team you were the most consistent. Leaving us at this juncture in the season could prove fatal. But I of course respect your decision to leave and i wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors. (except when the toon plays man city). Hey you still get to play with Duff internationally.

    Good Luck,
    Newcastle’s American Fanbase.

  4. Thanks for everything Shay. You’ve saved us a million times. You’re the most consistent and reliable player to put on a Newcastle strip in years. You’re one of the few that showed loyalty and true devotion to the club and more than anyone, deserve a move that I hope brings you the true recognition and silverware you deserve.
you’ll always receive a true hero’s welcome everytime you re-visit SJP.

  5. Magpie Forever on

You will never be forgot on Tyneside. A true Newcastle hero!

Thanks for the loyalty over the past 11 years Shay and for being the best keeper I’ve ever seen at NUFC. TOON LEGEND FOREVER and always in our hearts.

  10. Charlie on

Thank you so much Mr Given for spening so long with us, wasting your time not winning anything. All the best for the future.

  11. Shay,

All the best with Man City, but even with there millions I doubt you’ll be winning anything … We at Newcastle are a disgrace and I like many Season ticket holders will not be renewing next year, as the Club has been in decline for years and I’ve had enough! … The Club is a farce and it’ll take us years to get back in the top 10! … Thanks for your great service and see you on Sky soon!

  12. john gardner on

  15. Still hurts not having you playing for us Shay. You just don’t suit the Man City shirt though. It’s too weird seeing you play for anyone else. Can only pray you will come back some day.
