It’s hard to believe that Shay has left the toon. It’s been 11 years with loads of memories and moments. Toon fans under Lee Ryder’s (ChronicleLIVE) initiative gave their thoughts and feelings on their departing keeper and friend of the toon! More here
“Nobody will quite know exactly which straw broke the camel’s back pushing Shay to leave the Toon. But if Kevin Keegan’s departure in September and a crazy management system which involves a failed League One manager deciding which players a proven manager is allowed to bring to his team wasn’t enough to push him to the limit, then some inept performances from a team that lacked reinforcements (after years of neglect in the transfer market) and gave him little protection probably polished the Eire stopper off.
It all came to a head against Liverpool in the 5-1 loss. That day with United all over the place, Given shouted “We’re s***” when taking his goal kicks.
The crowd responded with shouts of “We know!”
All of it down to frustration and after losing the plot with his defence and sprinting for the tunnel and shoving keeper coach Paul Barron out the way in the process at the end of the Liverpool game, it was obvious it was over.
After that Given was torn over whether to battle on or call it a day on Tyneside.
He chose to call it a day after 92 clean sheets for the club in his 11 years and an endless string of superb saves.
Two Champions League qualifications (one of them ended by Partizan Belgrade on pens), an FA Cup final and a few narrow misses in the other cups are all Given has to show for his time on Tyneside.
He’s probably the most popular goalie in the club’s history and if there is any justice in the world, NUFC will give him a testimonial anyway.
Taken from Lee’s column on ChronicleLIVE. Thanks Lee for all the years and memories too from Shay and everyone at Shay-Given.com. We’ve enjoyed it all, the good, the bad and the ugly to come from 11 years battling with the Toon and their TREMENDOUS fans!!! We’re going to miss it.
Lee writes in closing his thoughts:
“Good luck Shay, good luck to a true Toon legend.”
