JJ hands victory to Arsenal

Arsenal FC HomepageAn unfortunate hand-ball incident led from JJ who had a great game gave Arsenal all the points after Newcastle getting two superior goals to Arsenals tap-ins. But goals count and how they're scored doesn't seem to comfort anyone, least not a club as hungry for success as Newcastle are. After talking to Shay, his words were "It was a nightmare to concede the goals we did and leave with no points. Also Henry's just dinked the penalty down the middle after he missed one so recently shows a bit of his class, but nevertheless very hard to take after two great goals from us. They got two tap-ins really".

"Shay World Class" Sir Bobby Robson

NAC BredaIt makes for terrific reading and relief was all around St. James park last night, making you wonder why it took so long to happen? Why not against Bolton on Saturday? Why not Everton? That's football folks, you don't know nothing till the final whistle is blown...folks will remember the goals but Sir Bobby wasn't so quick in forgetting Shay's efforts, saying "But don't forget Shay Given's contribution, because he made two fantastic saves in the first half and had it not been for those saves we could have come in 2-2 at the break." Well done Shay. Let's hope for a great result against Arsenal at Highbury now.

Newcastle again faced a team determined to take a point away from St. James. You can just hear their Manager "Get behind the ball lads, only attack on breaks and frustrate the Newcastle players/fans. Shay would like to replace Shearer!

Okay, admittedly the headline is a bit over-dramatic but as I asked Shay on the phone today who he'd like to see replace Alan Shearer when he hangs up his boots, he didn't pause in announcing "I wouldn't mind a crack at it myself, if the Gaffer would let me." John Carver just KEEPING an eye on things

Shay gave everyone a scare landing on his neck against Russia, but nobody felt it more (apart from Shay's family in the stands) than our very own John Carver (Newcastle's Assistant Manager) sent over to keep an eye on Shay and O'Brien. Carver said at the time Shay went down: "I was sitting in the director's box and I jumped up when Shay went down. He seemed to land awkwardly on the back of his neck and it was really scary for a moment. I was quite concerned but he played on and didn't seem to have any problems. I spoke to the Irish physio after the game and he said that things weren't so bad."

Shay will be fit for Everton

Visit Everton FC Official HomepageFears that Shay won't make the Merseyside clash with Everton are gaining momentum around the net, but Brian Kerr Ireland's Manager says "None of Shay's injuries are serious", so he will be fine for Saturday. No Love from Russia

Shay nearly broke his neck and Ireland our hearts with a 1:1 draw against Russia. Could have been worse, could have been better. Shay speaking of the mix-up with Breen to cause the Russian goal said "I don't know if Breeny won the header or the geezer (Bulykin) won the header, but it dropped down to the edge of the box and the bloke's (Ignashevich) hit it. And it was actually coming straight to me again and Breeny - I don't know - stuck his hand out or whatever and he's deflected it by me and I think it's gone through Colin Healy's legs on the line." So it was a goal that told it's own story. Irish fans complained of the huge reliance on Damien Duff and the absence of Robbie Keane. Now leaves only hope of overcoming Switzerland in October. Shay will be rested from the friendly with Turkey on Tuesday giving Nick Colgan and Joe Murphy a crack at Shay's job.

Shay appeals for support

Shay has appealed for support toward this year's Great North Run. Shay is patron of Macmillan Cancer Relief, and is urging any runners who are without a sponsor to back the cause.

Shay disappointed with penalty save

It had to be one of those days didn't it. Shay dives to the right side thinking it's going to go so far into the right corner that he'll have to get a good stretch on it, then Dunn hits Shay in the stomach. Where does it rebound to? Dunn. Another day it could have went anywhere, Shay would have been the hero and Shearer might have snatched a late winner to keep everyone on the Tyneside happy. Read the Journal's version here

Tough days at St. James

Newcastle Utd 0:1 Birmingham City

It's weeks like these last ones, where true loyalty and support are more necessary than ever. Both players and supporters will have to dig deep over these next weeks and turn things around. Nobody likes playing on a losing team and nobody likes supporting one either, but lets not forget Newcastle's bad start to last season and their topsy turvy Champions League start. There's still too much reason to hope. The message is 'Hang in there folks'.
