Unfortunately no points at the Everton. Shay had a great game and got his head on a corner kick at the other end, looking for that equaliser that wasn't to come. Get the match report here

Shay man of the match against Albania

Man of the match Shay during the match with Albania (photo from Sportsfile.ie)Against a tenacious Albanian team, Ireland got a draw that perhaps they should be very grateful for. Albanians on $150,000 bonus to win

The Albanian Prime Minister insists that $150,000 will go to the Albanian team if they can overcome Ireland this afternoon. That's like giving promising a vegetarian a meat-free world. The stadium with a 20,000 capacity is of course sold-out and the black market for tickets booming. It will be a MIGHTY win this afternoon if Ireland can overcome the home team on home turf.

Shay training in GeorgiaShay and team pleasantly surprised by Albania

After gladly boarding the flight inTbilisi yesterday, the Irish team expected worse conditions in Tirana, but were pleasantly surprised by the buzz of activity, bars, restaurants, cranes for building sites, etc. yes Albania has changed a lot in 10 years making Georgia seem decades behind. Barca want to compete, Newcastle want to win

It mightn't be a stroll around the park tonight, as Barcelona will want to finish well. If Newcastle get the three points, they'll have deserved it. I'll settle for a 1:0 for Newcastle. Webmaster

Could it be our year?

With Arsenal dropping all points at the weekend, Man Utd. still to come to St. James and Man Utd. still to play Arsenal, really anything is possible. While everyone seems content to talk about a two-horse race, Newcastle are content at third with really anything still possible. I have to say, I'd be glad with another Champions League spot but it sure would be a surprise end to a great season to pip Arsenal and Man Utd. to the title. Folks, anythings possible.

Shay will play in Milan

Shay's Dad, a goalkeeper of some note himself, would manys a time have had
to tape his little finger to the others to play in games, following decapitating tackles from burly Donegal centre forwards. To this day Shay's Dad has a right hand like a cow's udder as living testament to this. His son Shay will play against Inter Milan tomorrow evening with a sore finger from training, but nothing so bad that a little bit of cellotape won't do the trick. We have to give Bayer some respect

Shay speaking to the Journal

"I know our victory out there has had a lot of supporters working out the maths of what we need against Inter Milan and Barcelona to get through to the quarter-finals," said Shay.

"But that's extremely dangerous. It presumes we've just got to go out tonight and the three points are ours."

Make or break night at the toon

It's a night where nothing less than a win is any good. Bayer Leverkusen won their game at the weekend and took a lot of confidence from that, with their Manager Hörster saying "We're back"…but let's hope their return to form stays within the german borders as Newcastle and Shay have to get all three precious points tonight. And the best of it all folks, is that I get to see the game on German TV. :-)

Thanks Shay Bhoy

This is a note we received from a Dad who ran into Shay two weeks ago in Scotland training. He writes:

"Thanks to Shay Given. Myself and son had a great day watching Shay training at Rugby Park in Ayrshire but to cap it all off, Shay Given gave my son Sean who is to be the NUFC mascot against Sunderland on the 26th of April his gloves after his practise. What a great gentleman he was. I'll be looking foward to seeing the man himself again..."

Here we go…here we go…here we go…

Well it's off to Leverkusen we go this morning. About a four-hour drive. We'll meet Shay in the quiet of the hotel around 2pm, do some photos, autographs, etc. then get our 15 meter 'Shay is our Nr.1' flag out of the car and take Leverkusen by storm. But with Leverkusen's new manager, will the players be in for showing the manager what they're capable of, etc.? but also the Newcastle lads in to replace Shearer and Bellamy will be eager to impress. It could be a GREAT game. I'll settle for 0:2 to Newcastle and Shay enjoying some class saves! :-) Chat to youse again tomorrow...haway the lads...
