Webmaster on tour!

Tomorrow the webmaster is going to make the long trip (4 hours) to Bayer Leverkusen and hopefully meet up with Shay before the game and perhaps afterwards. He will do his best to take some memory snapshots that will get published later in the week on site...so stay tuned...

Shay's on German soil

So it's Champions League again. Bayer Leverkusen are saying that the game against Newcastle isn't important to them, then why is the game sold out? It might be a load of psychological gargle to throw Newcastle off and underestimate the team that threw Manchester United out of the competition last year. Ok, so they're struggling to avoid relegation, but every club lifts their game when it's foreign legs on your home turf. I'll settle for a 0:3 win for Newcastle and a hat-trick for LuaLua. I just need to see that sommersault again. :-) Visit Bayer Leverkusen's website here in english.

Quiet night in Scotland

A comfortable win for the irish in Scotland gives the new manager some confidence in facing Albania and Georgia in the next competitive games. Ireland won 0:2 and were rarely troubled by the scots. Dean Kiely and Colgan got to go in goals while Shay rested in the stands.

Super Stopper Shay to Stop Scots

It's quite a mouthful isn't it? But that's exactly what'll be in Shay's head tonight against the Scots at Hampden park. Ireland enjoy the debut of their new Manager Brian Kerr and Shay will be eager to impress and solidate his position as number one for Ireland with Dean Kiely breathing down his neck. Read the Journals version of the game against the Scots here.

Shay 'Man of the Match'

The Guardian gave Shay 'Man of the Match' saying: "In addition to the saves, his judgment when leaving his line was a relief to the defence. Best moment: The incredible reactions when heading over his own crossbar to spare Bramble a nightmare own goal". Read the full article here. (Guardian UK)

Newcastle 1:1 Arsenal

It makes you think "maybe" Newcastle could have went on to win it had Robert not been sent off, which left them defending a valuable point instead of going after all three. Shay made a remarkable and bizarre save with his head stopping Titus Bramble score an own goal. Get match report here.

Shay & Sir Bobby

Shay asked about Sir Bobby and his turn-around work at Newcastle United had this to say to the Guardian: "He has done an amazing job here. We were struggling to stay in the division and he's got us in the Champions League. It's a massive job and he's 70; he doesn't need this hassle. Yet he's there every day working his socks off. It keeps him going, he loves the laugh with the lads. He could be in Hawaii playing golf, as he says. He doesn't need the money but he wants to make us better players and a better team. You have to have the utmost respect for him. A man like that doesn't come around every day in your life." Well said Shay. Read the full interview with Sir Bobby here.

Funny old game...football...

One day he's on your team, the next day he's on the oppositions! What am I talking about? Steve Caldwell will be playing for Scotland against Shay (Republic of Ireland) at Hampden Park next Wednesday. With new Manager Kerr keen for a bright start on his Irish Manager adventure, Bertie Vogts will be wanting victory too on his own back yard. Is there such a thing as a friendly folks? :-)

Shay's possible other profession was?

161 voters resulting in: Barber 16%, Computer Scientist 11%, Dentist 7%, Model, 14%, Rally Driver 53%

The correct answer is that there's actually two right answers! Shay thought of becoming a Barber in his early career. I guess it was because of the amount of times he used to have to go in and get the hair tamed and he thought "this guy must be making a bomb!" :-) and the other thing Shay got involved with was studying Computer Science, needless to say he soon jumped out of that when the mathematics started kicking in. And judging by the way he drives sometimes, you'd definately think he wants to be a rally driver when he hangs up those gloves. Don't tell his wife but under his shiney well-behaved humble looking BMW M3 there's 343 horses raring to go. You can join almost any rally with that, but don't tell Jane! :-)

Fruit n' Veg

Fruit n'Veg was the right answer folks to our long standing poll. Shay worked hard every Friday night and all day Saturday selling Fruit and Veg. for his Dad's business which had the name 'Colehill Gardens' Shay and his brothers would prefer to call it "Colehill Slavery" :-). Manys a time when Shay or his brothers wanted to play football on the weekend instead of doing the vegetable work, his Dad would say "youse have only football in your heads, youse are not going anywhere till those turnips and parsley are bagged for tonights run" :-) An even funnier anecdote was what Shay's teachers used to say to him at secondary school "Football isn't going to pay your bills, Mr. Given".I have to laugh . Shay not going anywhere

Because of the large number of emails these days coming to Shay-Given.com regarding Shay's move away from Newcastle, we thought we'd better say something. Contrary to the rumours running in the NUFC 'rumours' section of their website, Shay ain't going nowhere. He's perfectly happy at Newcastle United and earlier this season stated his wish to even end his career there. Stories relating to a move to Man Utd. or Celtic are flattering but not true. Waterlogged pitch reminds Shay of home

Shay speaking to the Journal said about the condition of the pitch: "In a sense the weather is typically British and if it hadn't been quite so bad then a bit of rain and a greasy pitch might have worked in our favour. It's an anti-climax in the sense that we're all geared up to play and now we'll have to wait for another 24 hours." Read full story here.

Shay's family nickname revealed

Yes, somehow you guys seem to know Shay better than I thought with 57% of getting it right that poor Shay was called 'Crab' primarily by his older brothers (he had three) growing up. It was mainly to annoy him as he was the youngest and because he would get crabbit about the abuse, we lovingly gave him 'Crab' as a nickname. Went down like a lead balloon with Shay mind you. But sure what do you have older brothers for? :-))) If Shay were a Crab though, it wouldn't be too bad having those more claws to catch balls. Alright I'll stop here...
